Emory University

Business Challenge:
Emory University is home to nine major academic divisions, numerous centers for advanced study, and a host of prestigious affiliated institutions. The University has 11,300 students and 2,500 faculty members who represent all regions of the United States and more than 100 foreign nations. Emory's medical school ranks among the top in the nation, with six departments ranked among the top 10 departments and programs nationally. The school has 440 medical students, including nine MD/MPH students, and shares 57 MD/PhD students with the graduate school. The school also trains 1,000 residents and fellows. Five top-ranking allied health programs train 355 students. Faculty includes 1,583 members in basic science and clinical departments. Faculty clinicians in Emory's own or affiliated teaching hospitals are responsible for more than 2 million patient visits annually. Such significant involvement and responsibilities in medical education required Emory University to quickly and effectively comply with HIPAA requirements as mandated by Congress. HIPAA (or the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) is aimed at reducing administrative costs and burdens in the health care industry by adopting and requiring the use of standardized, electronic transmission of administrative and financial data. The University faced a critical deadline of training all relevant personnel in understanding new HIPAA requirements. Emory needed a user-friendly electronic course authoring system that could be deployed quickly and could easily and effectively deliver complex training HIPAA courseware.

The Solution:
Emory University chose Intelladon's national award-wining Advanced Learning Platform (ALP(tm)) to train medical staff, faculty and students in adopting national uniform standards for the electronic transmission of certain health information. By delivering substantive courseware via an engaging and highly-interactive e-learning system, Intelladon's ALP will guide Emory staff in properly learning and applying HIPAA regulations designed to reform the insurance market and simplify health care administrative processes.

Return on Investment:
Emory University administrators expect Intelladon's solution to save faculty time and resources... converting training that would have transpired via classroom or live lecture to a digital/computer-based delivery platform. The University chose the ALP(tm) to solve a logistical problem of committing staff to external training, thereby freeing up time for essential functions of medical research and instruction. The ALP offers unlimited opportunities for reinforcement and retention of information. Tracking functionality will also enable University administrators to digitally track results and long-term cost savings for Emory. By saving time, money and taking advantage of emerging technology tools Emory University continues to advance the institution's brand as one of the nation's finest medical and research educational institutions with nationally-known research programs in cancer, neuroscience, vaccine development, transplantation biology, cardiology, biomedical engineering, and genetics.
